Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Salvator Mundi’ (Latin for ‘Savior of the World’) is a painting of Christ as Salvator Mundi, dated to c. 1500. The painting shows Jesus in Renaissance dress, making the sign of the cross with his right hand while holding a transparent, non-refracting crystal orb in his left, signaling his role as the savior of the world and master of the cosmos. This painting was thought to be lost after about 1603, but was rediscovered in 2005, eventually being sold at auction in 2017 for a record-breaking $450.3 million.
